LONG ISLAND CINEMA This project proposes an architectural intervention that embraces the fantastical experience of cinema and manifests it in a glowing, responsive, iconic architecture. Situated on an old industrial Pepsi bottling site on the east river just South of Roosevelt Island, the building resulted from a series of folds in the landscape which created both a natural ampitheater for an outdoor screen and an iconic form that appears to emerge from the river itself. During the day the parametrically-derived superstructure calls to mind the industrial nature of the site, while at night the three cantilevers glow and act as lanterns, utilizing the shimmering, shifting river surface as a fifth facade to the building. In addition, the ampitheater landscape is populated by autonomous responsive mechanisms which provide audio for movies and light the landscape. During the day a solar flower emerges and collects energy, while at night two lights respond independently to movement and noise, creating a landscape that is constantly fluctuating and shifting in response to human activity.
